NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – A new documentary on YouTube focuses on the loopholes that allow for the production of synthetic and unregulated THC.
The film is called “High Stakes — How the US Accidentally Legalized Pot” and sheds light on the unregulated production and distribution of hemp-based THC.
It focuses on the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp nationwide. In the unregulated market, manufacturers combine other chemicals to create synthetic marijuana. The film's producers say these products may not be safe.
Documentary filmmaker Rob Rosen said: “What people don't realize is that there are thousands of smoking areas where you can buy e-cigarettes and intoxicating gummies, and they're completely unregulated.'' , and in many cases it's really unsafe.”
Rosen said there have been deaths caused by these synthetic products.
“According to the CDC website, over 100 people have died from this. There are many examples of people going psychotic, their hearts racing, or stopping beating, so these are dangerous products.” Rosen said.
Lume Cannabis' chief cultivation officer says legal marijuana growers and distributors have much stricter regulations on their products.
“We compete directly, but we're not regulated any more. One of the biggest obvious differences is that the products we produce here are regulated at a very high, very strict level. ” said Kevin Kuete, Lume Cannabis Chief Cultivation and Production Officer. Said.
“The Office of Cannabis Regulation is proposing changes to the Marijuana Control Regulations that would prohibit the conversion of cannabinoids,” the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulation said in a statement. We are also in touch with state and federal legislators to better regulate products sold as hemp, rightly or wrongly. ”
Kuete argues that people should only use cannabis products from licensed and regulated dispensaries.
