Melbourne Men's Shed (MMS) will host a World Mental Health Day lunch event on 7 October, ahead of a global day of mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.
Founded by the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and stakeholders in more than 150 countries, World Mental Health Day was first celebrated in 1992 and takes place on October 10th.
The Pentecostal Care Rapid Relief Team (RRT) will be working with MMS for a BBQ lunch on October 7th, hosting over 150 people at the Pentecostal Care car park, 132 Franklin Street, CBD, from 1pm. .
The event's 2024 theme, “Let's Talk About It,” fosters discussion among a wide range of people and emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and communication about mental health across different platforms and environments.
MMS chairman Andrew Stefanetti said members wanted to experience the day and the discussions it would generate among different groups around Melbourne.
“We want to explore the possibility for our members to interact with people experiencing homelessness or on the verge of homelessness, even just for a day, and see what kind of energy it creates. It's all about trust and connection,” Stefanetti said.
Inspired by the spirit of community and the gift of giving, Emergency Relief Teams (RRTs) serve people in times of need with care and compassion.
Founded in 2013 by Plymouth Brethren Church of Christ, RRT provides quality catering support and tangible support to charities, governments and emergency services facing humanity's greatest challenges. RRT adapts charitable support services to meet the needs at hand.
Kate Watson from Pentecost's Care also hopes this information will be spread to international students living in the Queen Victoria Market area. “There's a huge need here,” Watson said.
Former Melbourne City Councilor and philanthropist Beverley Pinder said World Mental Health Day would be a day for everyone where “true community spirit pervades the city's Top End”.
At the end of the day, ITEA College encourages students studying the Diploma in Community Service to assist with reception and general conversation with patrons for their mental and emotional well-being.
If you are having trouble, please come to the lunch event.
