COP16 can and must address oil and gas to 'build peace with nature'
CALI, COLOMBIA, 17 OCTOBER 2024 – Experts from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) are closely monitoring the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) in Cali and commenting. You can.
Government delegations will gather in Cali from October 21st to November 1st to promote a ground-breaking biodiversity plan to halt and reverse nature's decline. With just days left until negotiations begin, only 25 countries have submitted plans to abide by the United Nations' key agreement to halt ecological destruction, and the remaining 170 countries are yet to take action. Not yet. The plan is expected to be submitted before the start of COP16.
COP16 provides an important and urgent opportunity for countries to address the triple global crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change and toxic pollution. Governments have an opportunity to explicitly commit to phasing out fossil fuels as a key step towards COP16's theme of 'peace with nature'.
Despite the significant threat that oil and gas activities pose to biodiversity, particularly marine biodiversity, this issue has so far received little attention in international diplomatic dialogue, particularly in the CBD.
CIEL experts in Cali will also monitor developments regarding geoengineering and the high-level discussions on the Plastics Convention that will take place in parallel with COP16.
