As the cannabis industry grows, investors are refining their approach to valuing companies, focusing on financial performance and other important aspects of business operations.
Mackenzie Peterson, VP of Marketing at AdvisorShares, shared her perspective on what today's cannabis investors are prioritizing ahead of her talk at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference.
When asked what qualities investors are looking for in cannabis companies, Peterson noted that strong financials remain essential. “Strong financial performance, including revenue growth and profitability, remains paramount,” she said. But he emphasized that investors are increasingly paying attention to where companies operate, especially in states where cannabis regulations are changing.
Peterson pointed to Florida as a state with a lot of interest. With an adult-use cannabis vote taking place in November, Florida could soon become one of the nation's largest markets.
“Florida is one of the markets that many investors are watching this year, as the state is expected to vote on adult-use in November and could become one of the largest markets in the country. '' Peterson explained. This potential change makes Florida a prime location for cannabis companies looking to expand their presence.
Beyond financials and market presence, Peterson emphasized the importance of brand strength in a highly competitive industry.
Cannabis companies that can build well-known brands and establish strong connections with consumers stand out to investors. “Companies with distinctive, well-known brands that can differentiate themselves in a competitive market are gaining traction,” she says.
In states where cannabis is legal, establishing a loyal customer base is also a valuable asset. “In states where cannabis is legal, companies that can build a loyal customer base and establish a strong retail presence will be particularly valued,” Peterson added.
These factors are becoming increasingly important as more companies enter the market and competition increases.
As the cannabis industry faces continued regulatory and market changes, companies with a combination of financial performance, operational strength and effective branding in key markets are attracting investor attention. Peterson's insights explore how these factors shape investment decisions in today's cannabis market.
