The global cannabis seeds market is projected to witness significant growth between now and 2031, according to a market report by Allied Market Research. Market researchers estimate that the global cannabis seeds market was worth $1.3 billion in 2021, and the value of this sector will increase to $6.5 billion by 2031 (CAGR of 18.4%).
The increase in demand for cannabis seeds is due to a variety of factors, not the least of which is the modernization of laws around the world to allow the sale and purchase of cannabis seeds. A good example of this can be seen in Germany. As of April 1, 2024, adults can grow up to three cannabis plants in their private residences.
Many home growers in Germany buy seeds to plant in their home gardens. A recent YouGov poll conducted in Germany found that 7% of poll participants said they had already purchased cannabis seeds (or clones) since legalization took effect.
In addition to 7% of poll participants saying they have already purchased cannabis genetics for their home garden, an additional 11% of poll participants said they plan to purchase cannabis genetics in the future. Increased demand for cannabis seeds in Germany has led to a surge in sales among European seed banks.
Another region of the world where cannabis seeds are very popular is the United States. Currently, 24 states have adopted adult use legalization laws in the United States and Washington, DC. Although not all jurisdictions allow home cultivation, most do, and many consumers are taking advantage of the recently granted freedom.
In 2022, the DEA acknowledged that cannabis seeds are now legal in the United States because they do not contain enough THC to be prohibited. Hemp seeds are considered hemp under U.S. law, and hemp was legalized nationwide as part of the 2018 Farm Bill.
A great event dedicated to cannabis seeds will be held in San Francisco on December 7th and 8th, 2024. More than 1,000 cannabis cultivators are expected to gain access to the next generation of elite cannabis genetics at the first 'Terpunami' Seed Festival in San Francisco. Over 20 cannabis seed breeders will be participating in this event.
This public event is free to attend by RSVP and will be held on Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Terpunami will feature delicious food, drinks, art, DJs, and festival attractions. The Seed Festival weekend will feature events such as cloning and seed drops and VIP receptions at Bay Area dispensaries like Seven Stars. ” SFHashWeek said in a recent blog post.
The event is hosted by award-winning journalist and best-selling author David Downs. His “David Downs Presents” production team has brought more than 25 events to San Francisco in 2024. These include the hugely successful SF Weed Weeks and SF Hash Week.
“Everything about cannabis starts with great genetics and we are proud to celebrate our breeders. Breeders are rock stars and deserve to be celebrated with top-notch events in world-class cities.” “San Francisco is the perfect place for the cannabis genetics world to gather each year,” Downs said.
According to a recent survey conducted by Harris Poll, most cannabis growers (61%) prefer to start their gardens from seeds. The study also found:
