Griffith University is proud to announce the establishment of a new campus in Brisbane City. It is scheduled to open in 2027 in the historic Treasury Building on Queen Street, which previously housed Star Entertainment Group.
This landmark development will serve as the university's hub for business, information technology and law, as well as a center for graduate and executive education.
The acquisition of the leasehold rights to this heritage-listed building marks a significant milestone for Griffiths, expanding its footprint into the heart of Brisbane's CBD.
By 2035, the city campus will be home to around 7,000 students and 200 staff, providing a state-of-the-art educational environment that fosters innovation, collaboration and engagement with the wider community.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Carolyn Evans
Professor Carolyn Evans, vice-chancellor and president of Griffith University, said the CBD campus would act as a “gateway” for industry and community engagement, enabling partnerships with commerce, industry and government.
“The Brisbane CBD campus will offer a completely new experience for both students, staff and partners,” Professor Evans said.
“This flagship site will not only complement our existing Southbank campus, but will also raise Griffith's profile both regionally and globally, and will become an iconic hub for learning and exchange.”
Star Brisbane CEO Daniel Finch said: “It has been a privilege for us and our team members to manage this much-loved historic building for almost 30 years.”
“We are delighted to be passing the baton to Griffith University, knowing that the Treasury building is safely looked after by another proud Queenslander who respects its history as much as we do. .
“As a neighbor just up the street from The Star Brisbane at Queens Wharf, it will be exciting to see the story of the Treasury Building evolve and continue to provide unique experiences and memories for future generations. ”
Minister for Development and Infrastructure Grace said: “The iconic Treasury Building is one of Queensland's great landmarks and we are excited to transform it into a place of learning.”
“Former Prime Minister Sir Samuel Griffiths played a key role in commissioning the construction of the Treasury Building, so it is fitting that this historic site will have a famous university named after him.
“With its rich history, this building has always fascinated visitors and will continue to be enjoyed by the public.”
Griffith University is committed to preserving the historic character of its buildings while preparing them for future educational needs.
Griffith University is grateful for the support it has received from the Queensland Government during this process.
The central location makes the university even easier to access for students in the South East region, particularly those to the west and north of the CBD.
It is also well connected to Brisbane's extensive public transport network, including bus, train and ferry services, as well as future planned infrastructure.
International students will also benefit from our prime location, offering opportunities to live, work and study in the heart of the city.
“The CBD campus will cement Griffith University's presence on the world stage and attract talent from around the world to the 2032 Olympic Games,” Professor Evans said.
“We are excited to embark on this transformational journey to build a world-class education hub that will shape the future of learning and community engagement in Brisbane and beyond.”
