There's no wrong way to relax with a good book, so why not try and get a little mood boost in the process?
Housing Works Cannabis Co. (HWCC) has officially relaunched its monthly “Weed & Read program.” After a brief hiatus over the summer, the program is back with a set of cannabis products to enjoy while you read a good book.
“We quickly realized that the cannabis industry revolves around the community, and one of the ways we wanted to better engage with the community was to understand what people were interested in,” says Sasha Nutgent, Director of Retail Cannabis at HWCC. “One of our staff members suggested, what about coffee table books? What about reading? That would be really cool to do while you're high. And so Weed & Read was born.”
When the Weed & Read program first launched, HWCC was looking for books that aligned with the brand’s mission of promoting LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and female-led brands. While the first book was well-received, additional feedback was positive, with many readers suggesting the program should incorporate more visual books.
“This year, we decided to incorporate more coffee table books because attendees told us they wanted to include more graphic books and novels,” Nuttgent said.
Each Weed & Read book bundle comes with an assortment of personally curated cannabis products, all handpicked by the chosen book's author to align with the book's theme, and Nutgent says cannabis is great for reading as it helps to enhance the reading experience.
“I think depending on what strain you're consuming, it can really spark your creativity and open your mind to slightly different opportunities and ideas,” Nuttgent says, “so if you're consuming it while you're high and looking at a photo book or reading a book, I think it can really enhance the experience.”
The Weed & Read program will update a book once a month, and in October will feature “The Incomplete Highsnobiety Guide to Street Fashion and Culture,” a visual introduction to the most influential people in the street fashion world.
Her November book release is “Little Book of New York Style,” followed in December by “A Weed is a Flower: Artful Cannabis Photography.”
“Overall,[the program]has been really great. We've pretty much sold out all of[the past bundles],” Nuttjent said, “But overall it's been really good and I'm really glad I chose to do it, because I don't think anyone else is doing anything like this and it's a great way to combine reading and cannabis.”
