Our local community is still collecting donations to help victims of Hurricane Helen, including trucking business owners in Lycoming County.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — A flatbed trailer is loaded with donations in a parking lot on Reynolds Street in South Williamsport.
Kevin Breen owns Orange Blossom Services, a transportation business. Breen was driving to the Boone Banner Elk area in North Carolina for work just before Helen was struck. Shortly after he saw the devastation caused by the storm.
“I started going on FEMA runs and towing FEMA trailers to the North Carolina and Georgia areas. When I got there, I didn't just have a place to live and a place to shower, I had my personal needs. I saw what it was, and I drove down.'' On the muddy road, I saw the destruction,'' said Kevin Breen of Boone Banner Elk Disaster Relief in North Carolina.
So Breen and his wife are collecting donations for those who lost everything in Helen.
The couple plans to leave for North Carolina on Saturday.
As winter approaches, Breen is accepting cold weather gear and other items.
“Hand tools, disinfectant, propane cylinders, things we need to do the manual labor to get people back into their homes, or at least give them access to the roads to get into the city and get the supplies they need. ” Breen said.
Donations will be accepted until Friday night. Breen plans to collect donations again after Thanksgiving.
