Don't ask if toilet mushrooms are edible.
Everyone has a toilet horror story.
Sometimes it's an inconsiderate thing from a previous user who didn't flash, and sometimes it's a creature you only noticed mid-use.
What's a little unusual, however, is finding the entire Super Mario Bros. material growing in a bathroom stall.
If you don't have enough mushrooms or drainage pipes, you can't.
Mothership readers were using the toilets at the CapitalGreen building, a Grade A office tower in the CBD.
The reader said he regularly has “bad experiences” in the bathrooms of the 10-year-old building.
Then, on September 30th, I discovered a chunk of mushrooms poking out from under the drain cover in the back corner of my bathroom stall.

Mushrooms, or fungi, were growing from every corner of the drain, peeking out from the square drain cover.
However, the mushrooms were particularly dense where the drain cover met the shed wall, forming several large umbrellas with some smaller ones inside.
Adding to the obvious discomfort was the mysterious dirt that was probably left on the ground and the gap between the toilet fixtures and the floor.
That's me!
A quick search online will tell you that your bathroom may be suffering from an overly humid environment and may have poor ventilation.
Online experts say that while mushrooms growing in the toilet are not necessarily poisonous or harmful, they are always a warning sign, and if you find mushrooms in your home, it's time to renovate that bathroom. It points out that it is likely to indicate that there is a need.
As one contributor to a social media post on the subject helpfully shared: “It's safe to assume that mushrooms growing out of walls and floors are a bad thing.”
A Mothership reader satirically referred to his find as a “Mario Bros.” mushroom, which is quite appropriate since the Mario Bros. are plumbers and apparently there's a job for them. That's a mention.
