Advanced centralized operations centers dedicated to essential health services are operational across Western Australia.
The main medical emergency services are part of the State Health Operations Center (SHOC) with components from the Department of Health, WA Country Health Services Command Centre, Royal Flying Doctor Service, St John, WA and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. They are gathered under one roof. Services in a purpose-built facility located in the heart of Perth.
Co-locating these health functions will enable better coordination of patient hospital transfers across the health system and improve integration of WA Health with other state emergency services .
Located in the same building as the new Washington State Police National Operations Command Center, the SHOC facility has access to advanced power and network capabilities to ensure continuous operations.
One of the many services operated within SHOC is the recently expanded WA Virtual Emergency Department. The expansion of the Virtual Emergency Department will allow patients in the metropolitan area, ages 16 and older, to be seen virtually from the comfort of their own home. Patients in the region will continue to benefit from emergency telehealth services, which will also be located at SHOC.
SHOC is part of the Cook Government's $827 million initiative to improve access to emergency care for all Western Australians. Reforms already underway include increasing or reducing the number of aged care beds, a patient transport coordination hub to streamline ambulance movements, and a nationally led pilot to provide access to respite care for hospitalized patients.
Prime Minister Roger Cook said:
“The establishment of the State Health Operations Center and the co-location of these health functions is an important development in our Government's plan to strengthen access to critical emergency health services in Western Australia.
“This reflects our commitment to strengthening our health infrastructure and ensuring Western Australians have access to the highest standards of healthcare, no matter where they are in our state.”
Health Minister Amber Jade Sanderson said:
“Health care delivery at this scale requires new and innovative approaches to reach every corner of Western Australia.
“From Kununurra in the north to Albany in the south and everything in between, the State Health Operations Center ensures that people across Western Australia receive the right level of care, in the right place, at the right time. Masu.”
