An Amsterdam-style cannabis cafe is coming to California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1775, authored by Asm. Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) to legalize cafes.
The big picture: Under AB 1775, cannabis dispensaries would be allowed to sell non-cannabis-infused edibles.
Cafes like this are popular throughout Amsterdam, and Dutch cafes sell cannabis, food, and coffee, and often feature live music.
Flashback: Last year, Newsom vetoed a previous version of AB 1775, calling for stronger protections for cannabis workers in the bill.
Haney reintroduced the bill this year, with support from the Commercial Food Workers Union, with language that would protect cannabis lounge employees from the effects of second-hand smoke in the workplace. The bill passed 30-7 in the Senate and 63-5 in the Assembly.
What we're watching: AB 1775 goes into effect at the beginning of the new year.
What they say: “Many people want to enjoy legal cannabis in the company of others,” Haney said in a statement. With it finally legal in California, there is no doubt that cannabis cafes will bring economic, cultural, and creative opportunities and benefits to the state. California is once again leading the way in supporting legal and safe cannabis businesses and culture. ”
