NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A New Orleans police officer has been arrested and reassigned for allegedly punching a woman unconscious inside a Central Business District nightclub early Sunday (Sept. 22). .
NOPD announced that Officer Darian Crochet, 30, has been “reassigned to a managerial position” pending the outcome of both the criminal and internal investigations.
NOPD declined to say how long Crochet has been on the force or what his recent duties are, citing an “ongoing investigation.” It's unclear how those employment details will factor into the department's investigation.
According to court records, Crochet was charged with one count of second-degree assault, which in Louisiana is punishable by up to eight years in state prison if convicted.
Citing court documents, the website NOLA.com reported that Crochet was with the woman at 2 a.m. when he punched her at least once in the face, causing her to lose consciousness and fall to the ground. The woman later identified Crochet as her assailant through a photo lineup, the report said.
Mr. Crochet was released from the Orleans Justice Center Jail after posting $7,500 bail.
Conditions of his release included signing a curfew and agreeing to have no contact with the victim, other customers or employees of Apure Lounge. Judge Juana Lombardo also barred Mr. Crochet from ever entering the nightclub at 608 Fulton Street again.
