Police have confirmed that the man suspected of assault was an acquaintance of a man who died in Melbourne's CBD last week.
Seddon man Andrew Truman, 44, died after hitting his head while walking from Flinders Street to Elizabeth Street last Wednesday.
Police are still searching for suspect Todd Menegald, who is wanted on suspicion of assault.
Detectives investigating the assault said Truman and Menegald knew each other and believed it was a targeted incident.

Mr Menegald is also known to have visited the Mildura and Bendigo areas.

Mr. Truman died in hospital last weekend after suffering a brain injury in the assault.
In a statement, the family said they were still in shock over the loss of a man who was “not afraid to be himself no matter the situation.”
“He was a wonderful and passionate supporter of the LGBTQIAP+ community and a proud gay man,” his family said.
Mr Truman was a keen supporter of the Western Bulldogs and played football for the Wyndham All Abilities Football and Cricket Club.
Known as 'Chewy' at the club, he played in the Premiership five times and was a lifetime member.
Mr Truman's family thanked those who stopped to help, as well as police, paramedics and medical staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital where Mr Truman was treated.
