A Seddon man who died in hospital after being assaulted in Melbourne's CBD last week is being remembered as vibrant, courageous and a proud member of the LGBTQIAP+ community.
On Wednesday, October 9, Andrew Truman, 44, was walking from Flinders Street to Elizabeth Street when a man accosted him and punched him in the head.
He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he died over the weekend.
The homicide unit is investigating.
On Monday, Mr. Truman's family released a statement expressing shock over his death.
“Andrew was vibrant, independent, courageous and unafraid to be himself in any situation,” the statement said.
“He was an amazing and passionate supporter of the LGBTQIAP+ community and a proud gay man. He wasn't afraid to take the lead on the dance floor or at karaoke. I hope we all get at least an ounce of his flavor. Andrew was a well-loved, well-cared for and sometimes even passionate supporter of the Western Bulldogs.
The family has thanked those who stopped to support Mr Truman after Wednesday's assault, particularly the paramedics, police officers and Royal Melbourne Hospital ICU staff who remained with him until his death. .
Police have released images and surveillance camera footage of the man suspected of carrying out the assault, and are appealing to the public for their cooperation in the search.
Todd Menegald, who also goes by the nickname “Rooster,” is said to be about 180 to 185 cm tall and of a thin build.
He owns a black and white mixed Staffordshire terrier and is known to frequent Melbourne's CBD, particularly around Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street stations, and the Mildura and Bendigo areas.
He was last seen wearing a purple zip-up sweater, dark jeans, and a yellow beanie.
Police are warning anyone who sees Mr Menegald not to approach him and to call triple-0 immediately.
