As the debate over cannabis policy reform gains momentum, an important aspect of medical cannabis is often overshadowed.
Despite its fundamental importance, the role of medical cannabis in policy discussions has become less prominent as the push for adult-use legalization has garnered much attention.
Luna Stower, chief impact officer at Ispire and a speaker at the upcoming Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, emphasized the need to prioritize medical cannabis in policy discussions.
Stower noted that while the recreational cannabis market has the potential to generate significant revenue, medical cannabis continues to play an important role for many patients.
“Medical cannabis remains a cornerstone of this movement, providing critical relief to patients who rely on it for conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, and PTSD,” she explained.
She noted that the therapeutic effects of medical cannabis should not be ignored in policy discussions, especially considering the positive impact it has on public health. Despite its important role, medical cannabis has not been a priority in recent legislative efforts compared to the adult-use market.
Stower also addressed the role of medical cannabis in shaping global cannabis regulation.
“Its therapeutic potential continues to play an important role in shaping global regulation, especially in countries reluctant to fully legalize it,” she said.
While many countries remain cautious about introducing adult-use cannabis laws, medical cannabis has opened the door to reform in more conservative markets. Stower believes it is essential to continue to advocate for medical cannabis as a clear issue in policymaking.
As the industry continues to evolve, Stower emphasized the importance of keeping medical cannabis at the forefront of policy discussions. “We need to continue to advocate for medical cannabis as a separate and necessary discussion in policy because it addresses public health in ways that go far beyond recreational use,” she said.
