The Hall of Flowers Cannabis Market & Festival at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds was the scene of a historic moment in marijuana culture on Saturday, when organizers said 7,000 attendees set a world record for the most joints lit at one time.
The massive smokeout, hosted by rolling paper brand OCB, began at exactly 4:20 p.m., a favorite gathering time in cannabis culture.
“The Hall of Flowers is an annual event that brings together thousands of true enthusiasts to appreciate all aspects of the plant,” OCB Marketing Director Andrew Osterman said in a news release Sunday. “This record attempt was our way of celebrating the ritual and enjoyment of the perfect roll.”
OCB also used the weekend to announce a new collaboration with actor Seth Rogen's Houseplant line of smoking accessories and home goods.
As participants gathered for a smoke session, an aerial drone hovered above the crowd, capturing the sheer scale of the feat.
“The Hall of Flowers has always been about celebrating the best in our community, and today we took that celebration to the next level,” Hall of Flowers co-founder Lama Mayo said in the release. “The energy was electric, the atmosphere was unmatched, and it was amazing to see everyone come together to set this record.”
This year was the first time the industry event was open to the public, with Saturday's festivities following a business-to-business trade show on Friday that typically draws 3,500 cannabis industry professionals.
The open day featured vendors, celebrity chef demos and an appearance by rapper Wiz Khalifa, attracting 13,000 attendees, according to the announcement.
The event is named after the fairgrounds building and has been held every year since 2018 except for 2020.
