Two people have been killed in a collision between a bakkie and a bus in the heart of Durban's CBD.
The accident occurred just before midnight at the intersection of Stanger Street and Somtsew Road.
Emergency services described the scene as one of “utter carnage”.
ALS paramedic Garris Jamieson reported that both vehicles collided at the intersection, flying off the roadway and eventually coming to rest on the pavement.
“Upon arrival, paramedics encountered multiple casualties and immediately requested additional resources, including assistance from eThekwini Fire Department,” Mr Jamieson said.
“Around 20 passengers on the bus sustained minor injuries. They were stabilized at the scene and then taken to a number of hospitals in Durban for further treatment.
“Sadly, the two occupants of the bakkie, a man and a woman, both believed to be in their 30s, sustained fatal injuries. Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, they were pronounced dead at the scene.” Jamison said.
The exact circumstances that led to the collision are still unknown. South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police were called to the scene and began an investigation.
Mr Jamieson urged motorists to take extra care on the roads as KwaZulu-Natal faces wet weather this week. “Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy, leave for your destination early and reduce speed to ensure safety,” he advised.
