Joburg Emergency Services carried out a daring rescue to free the trapped workers.
Two contract workers were killed and three others injured by toxic gas after they became trapped in a manhole in Joburg.
On Saturday, City of Joburg emergency services are said to have responded to an emergency at the corner of Commissioner Street and Von Brandis Street in the Joburg CBD.
Joburg Ambulance Services carried out a daring rescue to free the trapped workers.
Spokesperson Nana Radebe said the dead were hit by smoke from an underground generator.
“Five Solid Management contractors were trapped in an underground manhole while on duty. Three were taken to a medical facility and two died from smoke from the generator.”
She said the cause of the incident was under investigation.

Earlier on Saturday morning, Joburg Ambulance Service received a report of a structure fire in Springfield, near Booysens.
Radebe said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
“Firefighters arrived to find the chemical factory fully ablaze. Six fire engines were called to the scene and are still battling the raging blaze, but fortunately no casualties have been reported. It has not been done,” Radebe said.

Earlier this week, the City of Tshwane's emergency services department conducted a fire and extinguishing operation after a 38,000-litre diesel tanker caught fire on the N4 westbound motorway just before the M17 in Pretoria North on Monday.
It is understood the tanker caught fire just before 10am on Monday and was completely destroyed.
The N4 motorway was closed and traffic was rerouted while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni later confirmed the fire was under control and clean-up operations were underway.
