A man appeared in court today following an incident at an Adelaide bus stop over the weekend.
At around 5.45am on Saturday, October 12, patrols were called to Franklin Street in Adelaide after reports that an intoxicated man had boarded a chartered bus carrying passengers and attempted to drive away.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the man sitting in the driver's seat in an agitated state. Police approached the man and asked him to get off the bus, but he refused. When the patrol tried to remove the man from the driver's seat, two officers were struck repeatedly in the head.
Police used pepper spray to subdue the man, but they were unsuccessful and he continued driving the bus.
Police arrived at the scene to help, and a third member was kicked in the head, sustaining a severe injury that left him with a split lip.
Edge PD was called to help remove the man from the bus, but the man was also assaulted and his handler was also punched in the face.
Police fired a Taser at the man, but were unable to free him from the driver's seat. A second round of pepper spray was used on the man, who was successfully removed from the bus and arrested.
The 28-year-old Adelaide man was taken to hospital for medical tests.
The man appeared in court today (Friday October 18) but did not apply for bail and was remanded to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on February 6. He was charged with four counts of assaulting a prescribed emergency worker and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
Two officers were taken to hospital for treatment, one officer sustained eye injuries and another officer sustained head injuries after being assaulted.
There were 26 passengers on the bus at the time, but no one was injured in the accident.
