Willow Industries recently partnered with the Cannabis Research Coalition to advance cannabis research.
In a press release dated June 4, 2024 (1), Willow Industries announced a partnership with the Cannabis Research Coalition (CRC). Founded in 2015, Willow Industries provides cannabis microbial control and post-harvest decontamination technology. Founded in 2022, the CRC's mission is to bring together stakeholders in the cannabis industry, including academia and business, to support research and efficient cultivation techniques.
“This partnership highlights how important industry collaboration and research efforts are to the future of cannabis,” said Jill Ellsworth, founder and CEO of Willow Industries, in a press release. stated in a release. “With our shared values and commitment to industry advancement, we are excited to join the Cannabis Research Coalition in the pursuit of scientific advancement and industry-wide standards.”
In partnership with CRC, Willow Industries donated WillowAir units that remove airborne contaminants within cultivation facilities and growing environments (1).

In April 2024, multiple sources say the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will change marijuana from its current status as a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug, the most tightly controlled category of controlled substances. reported that they plan to do so (2).
Last month, Dr. Justice, along with Dr. Riley Kirk, presented “The Science of Smokability: Insights into Cultivation and Post-Harvest Techniques to Enhance the Quality of the Smoking Experience” at the Cannabis Science Conference in Kansas City, Missouri ( 3). Their study evaluated how cultivation methods and post-harvest treatments, namely drying and curing processes, affect the smokability of the final product.
As Dr. Kirk explained in a preconference interview with Cannabis Science and Technology (4), this research project asks: Not only do you grow a really good product and make that smoking experience a very positive experience emotionally, but by understanding whether there's a culture standard or whether there's a dry-cure standard that takes dryness into account. How can we reduce the amount of harm that enters our bodies? We need to manufacture healthier products so that when smoke enters the body, it produces less harmful compounds and more beneficial compounds. Then you can dig into what the chemistry is. Once you learn the chemistry, you can dig deeper into this method if you want, but all it really does is learn more about the smoking experience. Because our industry hasn't done any of the really basic fundamental research to understand how smoke gets from plants to society. What is happening at the physical, biochemical level? What's going on with these different molecules? Are there different levels of transformation happening? And can consumers actually understand these little nuances or not? ”
